O-SSD Research Foci

Research-led speculative sầu design projects enable us to lớn tackle three core areas of human behaviour & discover their interrelationships with space.

Our main unit of study is the scenario; through imagined scenartiện ích ios we are able lớn speculate upon the ways in which relationships và interaction, pleasure & entertainment, genders và identities (& all the many intersections of these) could change in the near future.

We use the insights generated to study the potential impacts on spatial requirements, culminating in the exploration of possible emerging programmes of use and new spatial typologies.

relationships & interaction FUTURES

The definition và structure of ‘relationship’, ‘family’ and ‘love’ are evolving, as are the ways we interact, date & display passion & commitment. The ancient roots of human sexuality have been exposed, and polyamory & ethical non-monogamy is a growing desire for many (thanks to lớn the poly millennials). The word ‘Parenting’ is being redefined, what does that mean for the role of domestic space & the home?

Our research looks to lớn ask will the spaces that centre on design for the archetypal family become redundant? How will design allow for & celebrate future union ceremonies or multiple parents and/or partners? Will there be a growing desire for synthetic companions?

Scenarios: Consider a world in which holiday resorts are no longer resigned to lớn stag and hen do’s but provide a unique way khổng lồ holiday for the growing polyamorous population, where gender & sexuality are celebrated equally. Or a new norm of ‘wedding’ venues catering for multiple partner unions with aisles that allow a procession from three to fifteen. Or a time when ectogenesis becomes the most favourable way of having children, a new echất lượng in parenthood that dismantles the gender hierarchy and completely changes the nature of human reproduction and thus the structure of our working and private lives.

pleasure & entertainmentFUTURES

As individuals, the places and experiences we derive pleasure from change throughout our lives. The same is true of society; we used to derive pleasure from the macabre; freak shows, blood sports và public humiliation. More common pleasures today seem far less insane and far more humane? Or do they? What bởi the things we enjoy (or find taboo) say about us as individuals, or as a society? And what part does design play in this process?

Our retìm kiếm questions the relationship between humanity & gratification through the vehicles of architecture & thiết kế. We speculate about the future proponents of pleasure & imagine & thiết kế for this world.

Scenarios: Consider the thiết kế of a world where humanity has reached pleasure-saturation, the only way forward is to design a factory for the creation of synthetic-joy. Or the thiết kế of a secret HQ for a group of rogue pleasure-seekers from where they challenge strict authoritarian agendas. Or the thiết kế and execution of a new government owned Instant Gratification Unit.

genders & identitiesFUTURES

Space is gendered. Gender is spatial. Space is political. Politics is spatial. Space has identity. Identity is spatial. Therefore as society grows, develops và transforms, so vày the ways in which individuals behave in và experience the space around us. There are over sixty different terms to lớn describe gender, identity and expression, & every single one of these intersections experiences space in a completely different way.

Our retìm kiếm looks to explore the spatio-human experience. We speculate about the future proponents of identification và recognition through spatial design và within the built environment.

Scenarios: Consider a world where softness & femininity are not interchangeable, & skyscrapers are not phallic. Imagine a process of de/re-gendering our spaces… imagine a truly intersextional city?

Catalyst: human behaviour

We begin with a ‘what if’ study of a given area of human behaviour. Human behaviour can de defined as the potential/expressed capađô thị of human(ity)lớn respond lớn internal and external stimuli.

As such, society & human behaviour are fully inter-linked. Societal changes spark changes in human behaviour (& vice versa), this changes the way people engage with space & so must be considered as a key part of spatial thiết kế practice.

Methodology: speculation

We usespeculative thiết kế tools to lớn help us imagine và prepare for morejust, inclusive sầu và desirable futures. Speculative sầu design, ...in its simplest khung, speculative sầu kiến thiết is about designing through asking questions rather than searching for an answer.

As such, we ask questions about changing human behaviour và imagine scenarios for how it will change the way humans interact with space; questioning the impact on what and how we design space.

Outcome: spatial exploration

Spatial thiết kế, is the design of space and its uses, and it comes in many forms. We vì not provide closed-loop solutions but rather a multiplicity of possibles, drawings and models are not representative of solutions, but instead open-ended questions.

We use narrative props, spatial diegetic prototypes and film khổng lồ explore spatial potentials; khổng lồ kiểm tra ideas, express possibilities, present our findings & cốt truyện our ideas.
